Wachau becomes the stage for colourful wool jerseys and classic steel wheels on 13 July!

On Saturday, 13 July 2019 by organizing the Wiesbauer Vintage-Tour, the Wachauer Radtage 2019 will feature a cycle tour (without timekeeping) through the Wachau World Heritage Sites and Traisental with historical racing bikes and stylish retro jerseys.

Together with national and international cycling legends from past road cycling eras, unknown but extremely attractive vintage tracks will be explored. The famous cycling event "L'Eroica" in Tuscany, which attracts thousands of enthusiasts every year to the small town of Gaiole in Chianti, is the inspiration for this.

The participants are offered a journey through vineyards, historical sights and the unique natural scenery of the Wachau and Traisental valleys. In each section of the route there is a history that has remained alive. The Vintage Tour also shows its best side in culinary terms. As with the Italian original, the focus here is on the combination of wine, culinary delights and classic bicycles.

Furthermore, an authentic retro-feeling will be created by the participation of real legends of bicycle racing. Together with former Italian cyclist Gianni Bugno as well as member of the legendary Austrian "Puch-Team" of the 80ies Willi Lauscha the Vintage-Tour participants can enjoy unique track sections in special company.

Gianni Bugno was one of the biggest all-rounders in road cycling in the 90s. His breakthrough came when he first won the Giro d'Italia and finally won the overall World Cup ranking. In 1991 and 1992 Bugno won the road bike World Championship twice in a row. The "Puch Team" celebrated golden times in its legendary constellation in the 80ies: Willi Lauscha with more than 100 victories in national and international road races.

The almost 55 km long cycle tour leads to a large extent over traffic-calmed asphalt roads and gravel passages through the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Wachau and the vineyards of the Traisental. The start is an absolute highlight: a neutralized prologue from the Roman city of Mautern, past the art mile and the impressive architecture of the Landesgalerie Niederösterreich.  Via cobblestones the route leads through the old town of Krems-Stein back to Mautern. Then the participants of the VINTAGE-TOUR are awaited by unknown road sections:

Right at the start, the route leads past vineyards through the wine-growing village of Hollenburg to the Schiffberg, where the Wetterkreuzkirche thrones above the village. Via unspoilt country lanes and idyllic gravel passages you will take a rest together in Maria Ellend. In the guest garden the vintage bikers can enjoy culinary delights from the region with a fantastic view of Göttweig Abbey. Excellent wines complete the culinary delights. For the vintage bikers, the tour continues along the vineyards, past art-works on the Paudorf Sculpture Trail and the scenic Kellergasse in Steinaweg, passing by an impressive route section with a magnificent view of Göttweig Abbey. The last kilometres back to the goal lead directly through the Wachau World Heritage Site along the Danube. At the goal in the biker village Mautern traditional delicacies will be served.
